About Open Source Africa

Bridging the information divide
Many organisations working on the ground in Africa are still unaware of what free and open source software is, what it can offer them, and the pros and cons of making the switch from proprietary software to open source.

Open Source Africa aims to bridge this information divide, by raising awareness about the benefits (and pitfalls) of open source software on the ground in Africa. Whether you're an NGO, a farmer, a trade union, or a small business, we want to provide you with practical information that will help you.

Tell us what you want to know
We can only do this if we hear from you. Send us your open source experiences (good and bad); compile a case study so that others have real world examples to go on; write an article (unfortunately, we don't pay!); or tell us what you need from the open source community. Most of all, tell us what you want to know.

Contact us
If you simply want to contact us, send an e-mail to: info at opensourceafrica.org (put "@" instead of "at").

Who's behind the project
Open Source Africa is initiated by Open Research and its project partners. The core project members are Alan Finlay, an ICT and media researcher, Alastair Otter, who publishes and edits Tectonic and Gavin Dudley, an IT and new media specialist.

This start-up version of the website has been sponsored by the Open Society Initiative for Southern Africa. We’re grateful for their encouragement.
